Two installers who lived through the shift laid out how it actually went for Solar Power World, and the short version is that solar was just the front door. Heat pumps, EVs, smart rates that shift with the grid, all stacked on top. The American version is still mostly panels on a roof. Europe went and built the rest of the house.
The American version of “whole home electrification” is still four separate contractors and a pile of paperwork. Europe just showed you the bundle: solar, heat pump, EV lease, and a dynamic power rate from one company, IKEA and Octopus Energy already selling it. Watch for that same packaging to land here, because whoever bundles the install and the financing turns a $40,000 headache into a monthly bill, and that’s the version people actually buy.
You were told American solar was the whole play: bolt panels to the roof, watch the meter spin backward, done. Meanwhile a furniture company in Europe is selling you electricity, a heat pump, and dynamic rates in one bundle, and Octopus will lease you the EV to go with it. That’s not a nicer version of the same product. That’s the utility model quietly getting eaten by companies that never asked permission to sell power, and the ones still pitching panels-and-nothing-else here are two moves behind.
